Chronologically, 'Free Software' came as an offshoot of GNU (short for Gnu's Not Unix) project. The GNU project was the brainchild of Richard Stallman, who started the initiative in 1984 as a result of a dispute with AT&T over copyright terms and the distribution of Unix operating system... By 1996, Linux was installed on thousands of computers and was being used for real-time tasks such as serving pages on Websites... The Acceding Giants According to market researcher, International Data Corporation, Linux garnered a 27% share of server operating system software sold in 2000, up from 24% in 1999 and 17% in 1998.
